Persecutions worsen in Muslim dominated regions
Evangelical Christians continue to be dominated by Russian orthodox traditions
Concerning news follows on the heels of Open Doors’ 2019 World Watch List release. For the first time in eight years, Russia is ranked as one of the world’s toughest places to be an Evangelical Christian.
Most Russians who claim to be Christians today belong to the Orthodox Church. Orthodox Christianity is woven throughout Russian history. Protestant Christianity is viewed as that which is counter to the advancement of the Orthodox Church. Leaders often face difficulty when registering their Protestant churches. In some areas, civic leaders at the local level are reportedly applying strict regulations for Protestant churches.
In Muslim-dominated regions, Christians who have converted from Islam often bear the brunt of persecution at the hands of family,

friends, and community members. In some areas where conservative Islam is dominant, believers must keep their faith secret for fear of being executed. Throughout the country, unregistered churches active in evangelism may face obstructions in the form of surveillance and
interrogation by the local authorities.
